World Cup lifts Los Angeles hotel rates, occupancy stays flat
Los Angeles’ average daily rate hit $244.09 on match days from June 11 to July 25, up 23% year over year, while occupancy rose about 2% to roughly 73%.
The World Cup raised hotel room rates in Los Angeles on match days, but it did not translate into a similar boost in occupancy, according to CoStar Group hospitality analytics director Jan Freitag.
On match days between June 11 and July 25, Los Angeles’ average daily rate for hotel rooms was $244.09, up 23% year over year, while revenue per available room rose 25% to $178.65.
Occupancy was roughly 73%, only a 2% increase compared with the same period the prior year, with Freitag pointing to the tradeoff between World Cup demand and business and leisure travel that avoids matches because of competition for restaurant and meeting space and higher airfare and hotel rates.
Industry concerns also include FIFA room block overcommitment and operating cost pressures, Bisnow reports, noting that LA’s room rate growth was in the low to mid-20% range and that Los Angeles will host the next Super Bowl in 2027.
