FAA flags temporary separation loss between Marine One and jet
The FAA said it involved momentary loss of separation near Reagan Washington National, after rules were tightened following a January 2025 helicopter crash.
The US Federal Aviation Administration said a military helicopter carrying President Donald Trump came briefly too close to a passenger jet departing Reagan Washington National Airport, though it said Trump was not in danger. The FAA said the incident involved a momentary loss of separation after which the aircraft continued moving away from one another, adding that the agency is conducting a preliminary safety review. The episode is being scrutinized in the context of rules put in place after a January 2025 crash between a military helicopter and a commercial jet that killed 67 people.
According to Reuters, air traffic controllers did not halt commercial flights at the airport as required under a policy set last year, even though Marine One was nearby. The report said Marine One took off from the White House Tuesday afternoon while commercial traffic continued.
FAA rules require aircraft to maintain separation of at least 2.4 km horizontally and 152 metres vertically around airports. The agency said the aircraft involved continued on their way after the brief separation issue.
