Hong Kong urged to raise public housing space and cut wait times

The Federation of Public Housing Estates said average waiting time for rental flats was 5.6 years at end-March, and it wants a 3-year long-term target.

Hong Kong authorities should set targets in the city’s first five-year development plan to increase average living space for public housing tenants and to raise the minimum size of subsidised sale flats as supply grows, the Federation of Public Housing Estates urged, according to SCMP Economy.

The group also asked the government to outline a long-term aim to reduce average waiting time for public rental housing to three years, rather than treating it as a KPI with a specific timeframe in the five-year plan, citing concerns it could take longer to achieve.

As of end-March, the average waiting time for a public rental flat for general applicants was 5.6 years, which falls to 4.7 years after accounting for temporary housing allocations under the Light Public Housing scheme.

The federation said the 3-year goal could be met as about 175,300 public homes are expected to be delivered between 2026-27 and 2030-31, and it pointed to measures to encourage turnover of public rental housing.
