John Ternus to become Apple CEO on Sept. 1 as Tim Cook shifts roles
Ternus, a longtime hardware executive, will take over on September 1 and his first hire will be former hardware engineering vice president Laura Legros, pulled from retirement to report directly to him.
Apple will appoint John Ternus as its next chief executive officer on September 1, with Tim Cook moving to the role of executive chairman, according to Yahoo Finance.
Ternus has spent his career in hardware, joining Apple’s product design team in 2001 and leading hardware engineering since 2013. The outlet notes his involvement in products including the iPad and AirPods, along with hardware work across the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.
More recently, Yahoo Finance says Ternus’ teams redefined the iPhone 17 lineup, including the thin iPhone Air, and enabled AirPods to function as hearing aids. The report also highlights that Ternus is building his own team, with his first hire being former hardware engineering vice president Laura Legros, who will report directly to him after coming out of retirement.
Yahoo Finance adds that Cook’s tenure helped transform Apple from about a $350 billion company to well over $4 trillion, while annual revenue nearly quadrupled to more than $416 billion. The outlet also points to growth of Apple’s services business, including the App Store and iCloud, which it describes as worth over $100 billion per year, and the creation of the wearables category.
