Mysten Labs CTO Sam Blackshear to join Anthropic for AI security
Blackshear said he will step down from Mysten Labs, with CEO Evan Cheng taking over the company’s technical vision as he moves to defensive security research at Anthropic.
Cointelegraph reports that Sam Blackshear, co-founder and chief technology officer of Mysten Labs, is stepping down to join Anthropic to work on defensive security research. The move is framed around what Blackshear described as a shifting balance between attackers and defenders as AI increasingly gets used in cybersecurity and blockchain-related threats.
According to the outlet, Blackshear will help focus on securing systems as AI tools are used to identify software vulnerabilities, automate phishing campaigns, and accelerate attacks on blockchain infrastructure. He also said his April work included hosting a panel with security experts about how AI coding agents are reshaping smart contract security.
Cointelegraph adds that Mysten Labs is behind the Sui blockchain, which Blackshear co-founded in September 2021 with four former Meta executives. Blackshear said Mysten Labs co-founder and CEO Evan Cheng will step in to set the company’s technical vision going forward.
The outlet further reports that Blackshear described a key turning point when he ported a static analysis tool from Facebook to Move, Sui’s smart contract programming language, using Claude to flag potential vulnerabilities. He said triage was previously completely manual and the coding effort would have taken much longer without the AI-assisted workflow.
