US job cuts fall in July as layoffs remain concentrated in tech
Employers announced 33,429 job cuts in July, the lowest monthly total in two years, while AI was cited in 10,970 of those layoffs.
Forexlive reports that US-based employers announced 33,429 job cuts in July, down 27% from the 45,849 layoffs announced in May and the lowest monthly total in two years.
The July total also reflected a 46% decline versus July of last year, when 62,075 layoffs were announced. Through July this year, total job cuts announced reached 477,033, down 41% versus 806,383 cuts reported in the first seven months of 2025.
Forexlive says technology continued to account for the most cuts in July, with 9,867 job cuts announced, bringing the technology year-to-date total to 149,023 in 2026, a 67% increase versus last year through the same period.
The outlet also highlights that AI was the leading stated reason for cuts again in July, with 10,970 layoffs attributed to AI, which it says marks the fifth consecutive month AI led job cut reasons and accounts for about 24% of all cuts year to date.
