Crypto dark pools and OTC desks gained share of institutional volume

sFOX data cited by CryptoSlate shows dark-pool execution rose from negligible in April to 15% of monthly volume by June, while OTC-desk routing reached 77.7% versus 18.4% on public exchanges.

Institutional crypto trading has increasingly shifted away from public order books toward execution via dark pools and over-the-counter desks, reducing retail visibility into large orders, according to CryptoSlate citing sFOX.

CryptoSlate reports that sFOX said execution through crypto dark pools rose from negligible volume in April to 15% of monthly volume by June. In a separate July 30 report, sFOX estimated that OTC-desk routing accounted for 77.7% of institutional volume moving through its platform, compared with 18.4% landing on public exchanges, with May dark-pool volume totaling $147 million.

CryptoSlate, citing sFOX, links the change to a structural effect: when large trades sit on a public order book, other participants can spot and react to the pattern, including front-running execution or pushing price before the order fills. By contrast, the sFOX approach routes size privately and then spreads orders across multiple venues, with a single order broken into smaller pieces so the public book moves less, and with sFOX connecting to more than 40 exchanges and OTC desks and institutional clients routing through 14 to 19 in a typical month.

CryptoSlate also notes that sFOX expects the shift to contribute to deeper order books and tighter spreads once flow reaches public venues, while acknowledging that a quieter order book does not necessarily mean institutions are inactive because large buyers and sellers can accumulate or unwind without visible bids or sell walls.
