Many US colleges report stable or higher applications from China
An Institute of International Education survey of 585 US universities found 65.0% reported increases or stability in applications from China, despite Washington scrutiny of Chinese students.
With the start of the US academic year and increased scrutiny of Chinese students from Washington, many universities had been concerned about potential declines in applications from China, a significant source of international tuition revenue amid cuts to state and federal education budgets, according to a report discussed by SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that the Institute of International Education found 65.0% of American higher education institutions had seen increases or “stability” in applications from China compared with the prior academic year. The survey, conducted in May and June and based on responses from 585 universities and colleges, also showed 59.0% of institutions reporting declines in total international applicants, while 14.0% reported increases.
Within the survey results, SCMP Economy said the “most pronounced decreases” were for India, where only 39.0% of institutions indicated stable or increased application numbers. The report also notes that US President Donald Trump has targeted Chinese students over alleged ties to the ruling Communist Party and concerns about transfers of sensitive US data.
