Mortgage rates fall to lowest levels since mid-July
The average top-tier 30-year fixed rate slipped to 6.74%, down from 6.77%, after the latest jobs report came in far below expectations for some parts of the report.
Mortgage News Daily reports mortgage rates ended the week lower, with the average top-tier 30-year fixed rate moving down from 6.77% to 6.74%. The lender said the decline followed the latest jobs report, which showed much lower jobs created than expected, improving underlying bond market conditions.
The outlet said monthly jobs data is among the most important releases for the rate market, particularly because mortgage rates are tied to bond yields. It noted that while some parts of the report were far from forecasts, other components were slightly offset, leaving a net positive effect on rates.
Earlier in the week, Mortgage News Daily said rates were steady around two-week lows, with the average top-tier 30-year fixed rate holding at 6.75%. The outlet also pointed to bond markets holding flat day over day, and said flat oil prices helped keep broader conditions steady.
