UK rail disruption set to continue after power outage
Network Rail said signalling issues tied to an electricity cut in the Manchester Rail Operating Centre could keep delays, cancellations, and revised routes in place until noon.
UK rail passengers are again being warned of disruption across the Midlands and north west of England after a power outage grounded trains, according to the Guardian Business. Network Rail said further disruption is likely because many trains and crew are not in their usual positions following the unexpected incident.
The outage triggered signalling problems after an electricity cut out in the main control hub for the region, the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, which led to widespread cancellations and delays. Network Rail said engineers have been working to restore signalling systems that were affected by the power loss.
Operators urged passengers to check before travel. TransPennine Express advised people to check carefully ahead of travel on Friday morning, and ticket restrictions were eased so train tickets are accepted on Bee Network buses and Metrolink trams in Greater Manchester.
Northern said its “do not travel” alert first issued Thursday afternoon would remain until 10am on Friday, adding that some services will be amended and may not run at all. Separately, Network Rail indicated service disruption in the Greater Manchester area is expected to continue until 12:00pm, as posted on its website.
