Brazil orders exchanges to delay some outbound crypto transfers

The hold applies to transfers over the equivalent of $10,000 and can extend to self-custody wallets for up to 24 hours, starting Jan. 1, 2027.

Brazil’s central bank will require crypto exchanges to delay certain customer transfers abroad and transfers to self-custody wallets for up to 24 hours, under new anti-fraud rules that begin Jan. 1, 2027, according to CoinDesk.

The requirement applies when customers deposit Brazilian fiat currency, reais, or crypto at an exchange and then attempt to send the funds overseas or to a wallet they control.

Transfers exceeding the equivalent of $10,000, whether in a single transaction or across multiple transactions on the same day, will be subject to the hold, and smaller transfers can also face delays if an exchange flags them as risky.

CoinDesk reports the central bank said cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins, are used to move proceeds from financial fraud before victims or institutions can recover funds, and exchanges can release transfers early if their risk review finds no wrongdoing.
