RTX tests SPY-6 radar to speed destroyer modernization
Raytheon said testing at Wallops Island runs until mid-2028, with a $800 million investment aimed at doubling SPY-6 output by 2028.
Raytheon, part of RTX, has completed installation of the first SPY-6(V)4 radar array at a Navy test site on Wallops Island, Virginia, marking the start of testing tied to how quickly the Navy can modernize aging destroyers, according to Yahoo Finance.
The SPY-6(V)4 integration work at Wallops Island is intended to establish a framework ahead of a planned retrofit on the USS Pinckney (DDG 91), with SPY-6 variants already active on two commissioned vessels and installed on 11 more ships in testing. The program targets more than 50 ships over the next decade, supported by an $800 million manufacturing investment to double output by 2028.
RTX also operates the radar ecosystem beyond SPY-6, with Raytheon serving as the primary system architect and radar provider for the Patriot system. The article says the company generates recurring revenue through US and international military sales, maintenance, software retrofits, and radar upgrades.
On the financial side, Yahoo Finance links defense demand to performance, including a record $289 billion total backlog in Q2 driven by global missile replenishment needs. For Q2, the outlet reports revenue grew 14% year over year to $24.7 billion, EPS rose 29% to $1.57, and the profit margin expanded to 11.4% from 9.9%.
