US housing deficit held nearly flat in 2024 at 4.7 million homes

The US national housing deficit held nearly steady in 2024, with the gap landing at 4.7 million homes, according to Zillow Research.

The outlet said the deficit grew by just 43,000 homes in 2024, the smallest annual increase in years.

Zillow Research attributed the near-flat trend to a construction boom that helped slow the deficit’s deterioration through the year.
