SPY leads active ETF trading as volatility and AI-linked funds surge
SPY saw almost $30 billion of daily dollar volume on Thursday, while the tech-heavy QQQ posted nearly $24 billion and leveraged semiconductor funds also drew heavy activity.
Yahoo Finance highlighted a sharp rise in ETF trading volume in recent years, driven by a growing investor base and an expanded lineup of funds offering exposure to many strategies.
The report said SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) led overall activity with almost $30 billion in fund value changing hands on Thursday, while the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) crossed $1 trillion in assets but did not rank near the top by daily dollar volume.
Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) followed as the next most actively traded ETF, with nearly $24 billion in daily dollar volume, and the article noted that semiconductor and AI-linked products drew significant attention.
Among the most active were the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares (SOXL) with $7.6 billion in trading, ProShares UltraPro QQQ (TQQQ) at $4.4 billion, and unleveraged chip funds including iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) near $4 billion each, alongside bearish chip-linked funds also ranking among the most active.
