AMD posts record revenue, but shares drop after Q2 results

AMD shares fell 7% intraday after its blowout Q2, despite record revenue, as investors appeared to expect more.

Advanced Micro Devices reported what it described as record second-quarter revenue and beat expectations, yet the stock fell after the results. According to Yahoo Finance, AMD shares dropped 7% intraday on Aug. 5.

The article attributes the sharp reaction to heightened investor expectations, saying the market had priced in additional upside after the run-up the prior day. AMD had also gained 7% on Aug. 4 in anticipation of the earnings release.

Yahoo Finance also points to the earnings backdrop, including strong momentum tied to AI chips and a resurgence in demand for AMD CPUs. The company raised its semiconductor market outlook, projecting the sector could reach $2 trillion per year by 2028, and AMD is trying to win share from Nvidia.

On products and growth plans, the outlet says AMD launched its first rack-scale system, Helios, in the last quarter and expects to begin shipping it, competing with Nvidia's complete systems. Yahoo Finance adds that AMD expects data center sales to accelerate in the second half of 2026, with Helios shipments forecast to ramp in the fourth quarter.
