SK Hynix approves $38 billion chip memory expansion through 2031
The company will spend $35.2 trillion won on a second DRAM fab in Yongin, with construction starting July 2027.
SK Hynix has approved about $38 billion in capital spending to expand its memory manufacturing footprint through 2031, with a large portion tied to DRAM used for AI systems. According to Reuters via the report, the board authorized roughly 54.3 trillion won, about $38.3 billion, split between two domestic sites.
Most of the investment, 35.2 trillion won, will fund a second DRAM fab in Yongin, called Y2. Construction is set to begin in July 2027, and the first cleanroom is not expected to open until June 2029, the report said, citing a company statement.
The remaining 19.1 trillion won will go toward a new NAND plant in Cheongju. The report says ground breaks are expected in February 2027, with the first cleanroom targeted for December 2028, also based on the company statement.
The buildout comes as SK Hynix leans on its position in AI-era memory supply. The article notes the company reported record second-quarter revenue of 79.3 trillion won in July, up 257% year over year, alongside a 76% operating margin, and adds that shares fell 9.6% on the day results missed elevated analyst expectations, per the cited coverage.
