Coinsbuy drained of $8.1 million in coordinated TRON and Ethereum hack
Onchain researchers said about 79% of the stolen funds were routed through instant exchange FixedFloat, and Coinsbuy refilled the affected wallets within 24 hours.
CoinDesk reports that the crypto exchange Coinsbuy was drained of $8.07 million in a coordinated attack across TRON and Ethereum on Aug. 9, with blockchain researchers tying both chains to a single operation.
According to the onchain review, the attacker started with a 5 USDT transaction and moved quickly to empty multiple TRON wallets holding 6.04 million of the dollar pegged stablecoin. On Ethereum, researchers said three wallets were simultaneously emptied of 1.89 million USDT and 77 ETH, which was swapped to ETH via 1inch through a wallet created the same day.
The incident connected activity on the two networks through a cross chain swapper called Bridgers, whose Ethereum payout contract sent funds directly into an Ethereum swap wallet. ChangeNOW also froze a six figure sum after being contacted by Specter Investigations, and roughly $542,000 in ETH had not moved at the time of the analysis.
Coinsbuy refilled the drained wallets within 24 hours, to within 0.05% of pre attack balances, behavior researchers said suggests the exchange did not believe its private keys were compromised. CoinDesk added that Coinsbuy has not explained how the withdrawal path was accessed, and the attack vector remains unestablished.
