Coinsbuy wallets drained of $8.1 million across Tron and Ethereum

Analysis by BlockWatchdog says about $6.3 million, or 79% of the stolen funds, was moved through the FixedFloat exchange after the initial Tron transaction.

An attacker drained 8.07 million USDT from Coinsbuy wallets across Tron and Ethereum on August 9, blockchain investigator BlockWatchdog said in an analysis shared with Decrypt.

BlockWatchdog reported that the attack started on Tron with a 5 USDT test transaction, followed minutes later by withdrawals from eight Coinsbuy wallets totaling more than 6 million USDT. On Ethereum, the attacker took about 1.89 million USDT and 77 ETH from three wallets, and BlockWatchdog linked the cross-chain activity to the same operator via the Bridgers swap service.

The analysis said about $6.34 million, or 79% of the stolen funds, was routed through the FixedFloat cryptocurrency exchange, and another 150 ETH was sent through ChangeNOW. It also noted that 282.2 ETH, worth about $542,000 at the time, remained untouched across five addresses.

Hours after the theft, Coinsbuy replenished the affected wallets. BlockWatchdog reported roughly $3.93 million was returned to the same 10 addresses, with seven deposits matching stolen amounts within 0.05%, and argued this pattern suggests the private keys may not have been compromised. The investigator said the exact attack path was unknown, but suggested the attacker may have gained access to Coinsbuy’s withdrawal system, since nothing on-chain showed how the withdrawal path was reached.
