Sanders urges Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic to pause AI development
The senator warned that the Senate could move to regulate if the companies keep deploying AI at their current pace.
Senator Bernie Sanders has called on executives at Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic to halt AI development, arguing the technology has reached a level of risk where humans may lose control of it.
In a letter addressed to the three companies, Sanders said their AI capabilities have crossed a critical threshold and that the firms are losing control over the technology, warning that US lawmakers would implement regulation if deployment continues at the current pace.
Sanders cited reports that AI has been used to help develop new viruses, and he warned that if the technology ends up in the wrong hands it could lead to new bioweapons causing mass casualties.
The Guardian Business reports Sanders also pointed to disclosures that the companies’ models have been hacked, which he said signals the firms have lost control, and he referenced a statement from scientist Yoshua Bengio calling the incidents a wake-up call.
