Russia’s Supreme Court bars Yabloko from September parliamentary election

The court backed a challenge by the pro Kremlin nationalist party Rodina, which alleged Yabloko received undeclared campaign support, including from Western sources.

Russia’s Supreme Court barred the liberal Yabloko party from contesting September’s parliamentary elections, Reuters reported. The move sidelines the only officially registered party that opposes Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

The ruling was made in favor of a lawsuit filed by the pro Kremlin nationalist party Rodina, which argued that Yabloko received undeclared campaign support, including from Western sources.

Yabloko said the decision would be appealed, and Reuters said the party called the case an attempt by political opponents to remove rivals from the ballot.

During the hearing, Yabloko leader Nikolai Rybakov said there was no evidence to support the allegations and described the case as an unconstitutional attack on freedom of thought, according to Reuters.
