Maxine Waters could lead crypto legislation amid possible Democrat shift

CoinDesk notes Democrats critical of crypto could control key House committees if the chamber flips, affecting how lawmakers revisit market rules for digital assets.

CoinDesk reports that if broader crypto legislation fails this year and is effectively taken back to committee in the new Congress, lawmakers running the relevant panels could be Democrats with histories of opposing major crypto bills.

The outlet says a Democratic takeover of the House would put Rep. Maxine Waters in line to lead the House Financial Services Committee, while Rep. Shontel Brown could move up to the House Agriculture Committee, both of which have been linked to future crypto regulatory efforts.

CoinDesk also points to the possibility that a Democratic Senate could further change the outlook, and it frames the stakes as the industry and its allies potentially having to restart negotiations if the priority set by current Republican leadership drops under new committee leadership.

While acknowledging internal disagreement about crypto, CoinDesk quotes Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger saying lawmakers cannot ignore crypto and should work toward a federal regulatory structure.
