OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap leaves after eight years amid IPO prep

OpenAI confidentially filed for a potential IPO in June, and Lightcap’s exit follows other departures across leadership, ethics, and safety teams.

OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap said he is leaving the AI developer after eight years, announcing plans to start a new venture, according to Decrypt.

Lightcap’s departure follows multiple recent exits across OpenAI, including departures in April from leadership, ethics, and safety roles, and additional exits in July affecting product and business leadership, AI ethics, and safety systems, the outlet reported. Decrypt also noted that several of those roles have not been replaced, including the AI ethics lead.

The company has been preparing for a possible initial public offering. Decrypt reported that OpenAI confidentially filed for a potential IPO in June but has not committed to going public or provided timing.

Decrypt also cited a prediction market on Myriad, run by the outlet’s parent company Dastan, where odds for an Anthropic IPO before OpenAI were shown at nearly 85%, even as social media speculation has focused on the executive turnover ahead of OpenAI’s expected IPO.
