Philippine VP Sara Duterte-Carpio faces grave threats charge

Prosecutors said they met a “high threshold” before bringing the case, which they said is now within the court’s jurisdiction.

Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio was hit with a criminal charge on Tuesday over an alleged death threat against the country’s president, a matter linked to her ongoing Senate impeachment trial, Agence France-Presse reports. The Department of Justice filed a charge of “grave threats” in a Quezon City courtroom, a spokesman said, and prosecutors indicated the case can proceed alongside the impeachment proceedings. Duterte-Carpio’s lawyers argued the matter could not be pursued while she is being impeached, citing her status as a sitting impeachable officer. However, the justice department said that approach is not the obstacle to moving forward, and that it is for prosecutors in the impeachment trial to present the related issues. A legal academic said there was nothing to prevent the two cases from moving independently, as jurisdiction shifts under the processes involved.
