China’s expanding aircraft carrier fleet may be vulnerable to submarine attacks, with a new analysis arguing that the People’s Liberation Army Navy lags the United States in defensive undersea capability, according to a report summarized by SCMP Economy.
The Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies lays out a “cost-imposition” approach for the US and its allies, citing land-based strike networks, long-range air strikes supported by satellites, cyber and electromagnetic attacks, and drone swarms.
SCMP Economy highlights that analysts believe submarine ambushes are the most acute risk, pointing specifically to US attack submarines operating in the western Pacific as a potent threat.
The report’s core concern is that gaps in China’s undersea detection and tracking could prevent timely awareness of approaching threats, leaving high value ships more exposed.
