Child e-scooter crash injuries in England rise, study finds
The review of injuries among under-16s at three paediatric trauma centres found 477 e-scooter injuries from January 2019 to December 2024, with fewer than 2% of children wearing helmets.
A study into e-scooter collisions involving children in England found a sharp rise in injuries, with the average age of those hurt at 12 and the youngest just nine years old, according to research published in the Emergency Medicine journal.
Guardian Business reports researchers reviewed injury records for under-16s treated at Alder Hey in Liverpool, and Sheffield and Royal Manchester children’s hospitals between January 2019 and December 2024, documenting almost 65% of injured children were male and that limb injuries were most common, followed by head and facial injuries.
The hospitals recorded a total of 477 e-scooter injuries over the period, with numbers increasing significantly since 2019, while fewer than 2% of patients had been wearing a helmet.
More than 80% of injuries were linked to private e-scooters, which can only be ridden legally on private land, though most accidents occurred on public land, roads and parks, the study found, and it called for policy changes including speed limiters or helmet mandates and clearer guidance from retailers.
