HK government orders lift fixes at Queen Mary Hospital clinical block
Officials said repairs to address lift and negative pressure system defects are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, after delays pushed back the full launch of Clinical Block 1.
Hong Kong authorities have demanded that a contractor rectify faulty lifts in a new block at Queen Mary Hospital after multiple glitches delayed the launch of all clinical services there, according to the South China Morning Post.
In a joint reply cited by SCMP, the Architectural Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, and the Hospital Authority attributed the delayed service start for Clinical Block 1 to defect rectification of the lift works and negative pressure systems, with repairs expected to finish within the fourth quarter of this year.
Clinical Block 1 is part of the first phase of the hospital redevelopment project, which SCMP reports is valued at HK$13.5 billion, and the 34-storey building construction began in 2018 and was completed in 2025.
The block is designed to house multiple units including accident and emergency, emergency medicine and inpatient wards, diagnostic radiology, a peri-operative centre, cardiac catheterisation laboratories, and intensive care units, while authorities have reserved the right to pursue claims for losses.
