John Lee pays tribute to Zhu Rongji for support through 1997 crisis

Lee said Zhu visited Hong Kong multiple times and reached out to people across different walks of life as the city navigated major challenges.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said he was profoundly saddened by the death of former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, and he extended condolences to Zhu’s family, according to a statement issued late Wednesday night.

Lee credited Zhu with supporting Hong Kong during challenging periods, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, saying the former premier helped Hong Kong stay united and work to leverage its strengths while backing the city’s prosperity and stability as an international financial center.

The chief executive also said Zhu had kept Hong Kong’s development close to his heart and supported the city’s growth over the years, adding that Zhu visited the territory on multiple occasions in different capacities and reached out to Hong Kong people from all walks of life.
