Micron trades at a steep valuation discount as memory supply outlook shifts

The article highlights that SK Hynix plans to invest more than $38 billion in new memory facilities, a move that could increase supply over time and reshape Micron's pricing power.

Micron Technology shares are trading at about 20 times trailing earnings, below the S&P 500 average multiple of 26, but investors are being warned that the bigger issue is uncertainty around the duration of the memory and storage supply shortage, according to Yahoo Finance.

The outlet points to South Korean rival SK Hynix, which recently announced plans to invest more than $38 billion in new facilities. That investment is framed as a potential pressure on Micron's stock by raising fears that additional supply could eventually become available.

Yahoo Finance says the shortage is likely to persist in the short term, supporting high prices for memory and storage products. It also notes that the factories will take years to build, but in a year or two, as supply increases, the demand-plus-price tailwind for Micron could fade.

Despite the valuation discount, the article says Micron is up around 600% over the past 12 months, attributing optimism to ongoing demand tied to artificial intelligence investment. It cautions that the company’s valuation depends heavily on how quickly the supply shortage improves and how fast conditions can change in the tech sector.
