SEC postpones Regulation Crypto meeting and delays key rulemaking
The SEC said the Friday meeting was canceled due to an unforeseen scheduling issue, pushing its first major digital-asset rulemaking step to a later date.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has canceled a Friday meeting it planned to use to propose its first major crypto rule, known as Regulation Crypto, and moved the session to a later date without setting a new one. According to the SEC, the change came because of an unforeseen scheduling issue, according to a statement from an agency spokesperson, released as an end-of-day update Thursday.
Regulation Crypto was expected to outline a limited framework for issuing crypto securities without automatically triggering SEC registration requirements, and could allow projects to later move out of the SEC's management and regulatory visibility. The broader effort is being watched closely as industry groups wait for clearer paths for tokenized securities activity.
The delay also matters because it arrives with the Senate still working through the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which would provide a legal foundation for crypto market activity in the U.S. With that legislation not yet advancing and the SEC's first rule proposal delayed, market participants are left to watch whether Congress or the SEC delivers regulatory guidance first, including other anticipated efforts such as an innovation exemption for tokenizing securities.
