SpaceX shares jump 35% after lock-up expiry, reclaim IPO level

Shares surged 35% in five sessions after the August 6 lock-up expiration, adding about $500 billion in market value and pushing the stock back above its $135 IPO price.

SpaceX shares rose more than 30% after lock-up restrictions expired earlier this month, easing fears that the eligibility of large blocks of stock would spark heavy selling, according to LiveMint Markets, citing Reuters.

In the five trading sessions since the August 6 lock-up expiry, the stock gained 35%, adding roughly $500 billion to market capitalisation and moving back above its IPO price of about $135. The rally came as around 911 million shares became eligible for trading last week, increasing the company free float to 1.55 billion shares from 639 million shares available at debut on Nasdaq.

LiveMint Markets also noted that SpaceX’s unlocking schedule is staggered across nine stages rather than using a single 180 day post-IPO lock-up window. After the first batch, another 319 million shares could become eligible on August 20, with roughly 700 million shares in September and a similar amount in October.

The article said the timing has coincided with market volatility tied to earlier factors, including a drop of 14% the day before the expiration that was attributed to the company’s first earnings report and higher than expected AI related capital expenditures. It also pointed to remaining future unlock events, including in June 2027 when final scheduled lock-ups would make Elon Musk’s 6.4 billion Class A shares eligible for trading.
