Sycamore Mid Cap Value strategy highlights Steel Dynamics rally
The strategy’s Q2 2026 letter cites rising steel prices and wider metal spreads, alongside tariff protection under the 25% Section 232 regime, as key drivers for Steel Dynamics’ performance.
Sycamore Capital Management, a franchise of Victory Capital Management, said its Sycamore Mid Cap Value Equity Strategy returned 9.6% net in Q2 2026, below the Russell Midcap Value Index’s 13.83% gain, attributing the gap to stock selection and sector allocation. The firm also noted that small-cap equities outpaced large- and mid-cap peers during the quarter, even as market gains concentrated in a select group of stocks tied to AI-related momentum.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, the firm pointed to Steel Dynamics, Inc. as one of the strategy’s top contributors. On August 12, 2026, Steel Dynamics closed at $263.18 per share, the company reported in the letter context, with a market capitalization of $37.72 billion. The stock also showed a 12.06% one-month return and a 106.56% rise over the prior 52 weeks.
The letter said steel prices rose during the quarter, which it linked to widening metal spreads. It also attributed reduced import competition to the 25% Section 232 tariff regime, arguing that helped domestic producers maintain pricing power. The letter added that Steel Dynamics’ aluminum business improved as its Mississippi facility added capacity into a domestic supply deficit, with higher import tariffs widening that deficit further.
Sycamore Capital Management said the letter’s broader takeaway was to reexamine exposure risks tied to market concentration and the influence of passive investment vehicles, particularly in an environment where AI-driven momentum can skew returns. The firm said it encourages investors to conduct a cautious review of current holdings in light of those risks.
