Twitch lets Amazon train generative AI on streamer content by default
The “Training for Generative AI” toggle is opt-out, and turning it off only stops the use of channel content for training, while Twitch says it can still use that content for captions and other AI features.
Twitch has enabled by default a setting that allows Amazon to use streamer content to train generative AI models on the platform, with the control labeled “Training for Generative AI” under account settings. According to Decrypt, Twitch says the change adds a way for users to opt out of having their channel content used for model training across Amazon.
Twitch says opting out will not stop other AI uses of channel content. The company states that even with the training toggle off, content can still be used for functions including captions, recommendations, moderation, and other AI features.
The scope described by Twitch includes streams, videos on demand, clips, highlights, chat, text, and images. In Twitch’s own FAQ, the company gives an example of how a streamer’s audio could be used to refine speech-to-text models, which it says can improve captions on Twitch and across Amazon.
During a Twitch Q&A, chief product officer Mike Minton said the control was made opt-out because “if it was opt-in, nobody would opt in,” while also adding he did not know whether any existing training had already used content. Twitch community head Mary Kish said she personally opted out and described the setting as a response to a community that does not want its work used to train generative models.
