Twitch lets users opt out of Amazon AI training from channel content

Twitch says AI training collection is enabled by default, and it will use opted-in users' streams, clips, images and chats without reselling the collected data.

Twitch has introduced an option that lets users prevent Amazon from using their channel content to train Amazon's generative AI models, after the change prompted backlash from streamers and viewers. According to BBC Business, Twitch said users can disable a default setting that would allow Amazon to use streams, clips, images, chats and other channel content for AI training. Twitch’s chief product officer Mike Minton said during a platform stream that an opt-in approach would likely result in few users participating, adding that Twitch is “respecting” opt-out requests.

BBC Business reports that Twitch also said data collected through the opt-in setting would not be resold to other companies. During the same session, Twitch’s head of community Mary Kish walked viewers through how to turn off generative AI training via channel settings, and she told users the reaction may not be positive.

The outlet noted it is not clear when Amazon began collecting Twitch users’ data for AI training, and Twitch’s chat saw hundreds of comments criticizing the move, with some urging the platform to set an industry standard against default data collection.
