UK confirms it will not deport ex-Hong Kong leader Wu Chi-wai
The UK immigration minister said overseas convictions will not automatically bar BN(O) settlement applications, and Wu was allowed temporary admission after an initial Heathrow refusal.
SCMP Economy reports that the United Kingdom will not deport former Hong Kong opposition leader Wu Chi-wai, after he was granted permission to enter the country despite earlier problems at London Heathrow.
According to a written reply to former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten, UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship Jo White said overseas convictions should not trigger an automatic refusal of settlement applications under the British National (Overseas) route.
Wu, a former chairman of the now-defunct Democratic Party and an ex-lawmaker, was initially refused entry at Heathrow earlier this month before receiving temporary admission, after which he was later released to stay as a visitor for six months.
SCMP Economy adds that Wu was released from a Hong Kong prison in late June after serving four years and five months in a subversion case tied to his role in a 2020 unofficial primary election, and the report said he had been considering applying for the BN(O) pathway to reunite with family members already in Britain.
