ECB details accessibility features for digital euro app

The ECB says the app is being developed for testing in the digital euro pilot starting in 2027.

The European Central Bank has outlined accessibility features for a digital euro app intended to provide basic digital euro services to users with a range of needs and levels of digital confidence.

The ECB said accessibility and inclusion are core design principles, with features designed to go beyond requirements in the European Accessibility Act and related standards. It cited design standards aligned with the highest level of mobile payment accessibility requirements under adapted Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Among the proposed functions, the ECB highlighted enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen reader support, time-out warnings, simplified language, error prevention, and reduced motion settings, covering perception, operability, and cognitive accessibility.

The ECB said the accessibility proposal has been shared with market participants and stakeholders and was developed with consumer organizations, accessibility experts, and national central banks. It also said the app is expected to be tested during a digital euro pilot to launch in 2027.
