BYD plans humanoid robot debut in August at Di Space centres

The Shenzhen EV maker says its first humanoid robots will interact with visitors at its Di Space showrooms, rather than being a concept product.

BYD plans to unveil its first humanoid robots in August, positioning the Shenzhen-based electric vehicle maker for a push into embodied artificial intelligence, according to a statement shared with the South China Morning Post.

The company said the robots will debut at its Di Space experience centres, and that they will be able to interact with visitors to its showrooms.

BYD’s Di Space network is designed to showcase the firm’s vehicle technology in a more immersive format than a traditional showroom, the outlet reported.

The move follows BYD’s repeated announcements about entering the humanoid robot market after Tesla launched its Optimus robot, and in June BYD executive vice-president Stella Li said the company has made a “huge investment in AI” and humanoid robotics, with expectations that China could be the first market to see full commercialisation of humanoid robots.
