Ethereum Foundation shifts away from Poseidon in post-quantum plan

The foundation plans to use conventional hash functions like SHA or BLAKE instead, while targeting a leanVM production timeline in 2027 and broader layer deployments in 2028.

Cointelegraph reports that the Ethereum Foundation is changing direction in its planned post-quantum architecture by moving away from the Poseidon hash function. Researcher Justin Drake said the pivot follows advances in compact proofs that have reduced Poseidon’s earlier performance edge.

According to Cointelegraph, Drake said the foundation will abandon Poseidon and rely on established alternatives such as SHA or BLAKE. He linked the change to improvements in SNARKs, which are compact proofs designed to verify computations without replaying the underlying work, making conventional hashes efficient enough for Ethereum’s planned systems.

Cointelegraph adds that Drake described a preliminary schedule, targeting a production-ready leanVM in 2027 and deployments across Ethereum’s consensus, data, and execution layers in 2028. Those dates remain subject to change.

The outlet also cited Eigen Labs founder and CEO Sreeram Kannan, who said established hash-based systems can have fewer known attack avenues and may be faster to deploy due to years of scrutiny. Cointelegraph said Kannan also pointed to joint work with the foundation and zero-knowledge proof company Succinct that increased proving speeds by 2.5 times.
