Open-weight AI models could pressure US private AI valuations ahead of IPOs

The shift toward cheaper open-weight models changes frontier AI economics, potentially weakening the pricing power that has supported valuations for companies preparing for IPO listings.

Yahoo Finance argues that the economics underpinning the valuations of leading US private AI companies are being challenged as Chinese firms produce more capable open-weight models at dramatically lower costs, while US technology companies work on alternatives.

The piece notes that Anthropic has confidentially filed for an IPO, and OpenAI has also filed confidentially for a US listing, with Reuters cited on potential valuation targets including up to $1 trillion for OpenAI and $965 billion for Anthropic in their latest private funding round, before later expectations pushed Anthropic’s possible IPO valuation higher.

Open-weight models can alter how businesses buy and use AI, because instead of paying per inference, companies may download model weights, deploy on their own infrastructure, and customize for specific applications. Yahoo Finance adds that this could lower inference costs and increase control over sensitive data.

The article frames the strategic change as the AI race moving beyond only closed-model performance, toward distributing capable AI more cheaply and efficiently, which it says could undermine the economic moat that has supported frontier AI valuations as the companies near the public markets.
