US stocks slip as S&P 500 hits record, consumer sentiment weakens
The S&P 500 slipped after a record close, while the Dow and Nasdaq-100 each fell 0.2%, as retail sales fell the most in more than a year and consumer sentiment worsened.
US stocks edged lower on Friday, with the S&P 500 moving just below the flat line after reaching a record high, according to Yahoo Finance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2%, and the Nasdaq-100 declined 0.2% as consumer sentiment deteriorated.
Yahoo Finance also cited a shift in attention toward retail earnings next week, including results from Target and Walmart, followed by Nvidia's highly anticipated report on Aug. 26.
On the data front, the story pointed to US retail sales declining the most in more than a year last month, based on new Census Bureau figures. A preliminary August consumer sentiment reading from the University of Michigan survey also showed Americans turned more pessimistic as inflation remained top of mind.
