France tax breach reportedly exposes about 678,000 people to crypto crimes
The breached records are said to include tax identifiers and personal contact details, and are reportedly being marketed on dark web marketplaces for several thousand euros.
A reported cyberattack on France's General Directorate of Public Finances has exposed sensitive taxpayer information covering roughly 678,437 people, according to The Block. France's Finance Minister said the breach occurred sometime in late June, with data taken from individual and professional taxpayers.
The compromised database is reported to include names, birthdates, home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. The Block also reports that the records reportedly include income information, with nearly 27,000 people showing tax income of at least €100,000 and 386 reporting more than €1 million, though the exact number affected has not been confirmed during an ongoing investigation.
The Block further reports that the stolen database is reportedly for sale on dark web marketplaces for several thousand euros. It says the breach does not appear to specifically identify which taxpayers own crypto, but could still help criminals identify wealthy targets for fraud, home invasions, or kidnappings.
Separately, The Block noted that crypto wrench attacks in France are on pace to make 2026 the worst year ever for violent crimes targeting crypto holders in the country, adding to concerns about safety for people holding digital assets.
