Amazon Prime overcharges prompt refunds after duplicated memberships
The reporter said three legitimate Prime accounts billed about $15 per month each for seven years, with Amazon refunding roughly $1,200 after the issue was discovered via a RocketMoney ad.
Moneywise staff have shared examples of costly personal finance missteps, including one editor’s experience with unknowingly paying for three separate Amazon Prime memberships for seven years, according to Yahoo Finance.
The memberships were tied to three different email addresses, and each account charged about $15 per month, which the editor said totaled nearly $4,000.
After seeing ads for RocketMoney, the editor investigated and found the duplicated charges, then contacted Amazon to request a refund.
Because the subscriptions were legitimate, Amazon did not treat the case as fraud, but Yahoo Finance reports the company still refunded a portion of the charges, totaling about $1,200, and the editor emphasized auditing recurring subscriptions and reviewing credit card statements.
