Hackers use macOS Screen Sharing flaw to install Monero miners

The Netherlands’ National Cyber Security Centre said U.S. officials rated the vulnerability a critical 9.8/10 on the CVSS scale, and Apple patched it on Aug. 6.

Hackers have exploited a flaw in Apple’s Screen Sharing feature to gain full control of internet reachable Macs and install Monero mining software, according to the Netherlands’ National Cyber Security Centre, as reported by The Block.

The advisory says Apple patched the vulnerability on Aug. 6 in macOS Tahoe 26.6.1, Sequoia 15.7.9, and Sonoma 14.8.9, and noted Screen Sharing is switched off by default but is commonly used to reach bare metal devices hosted remotely.

The Block also reported that U.S. officials rated the severity at 9.8 out of 10 on the CVSS scale, while security firm Huntress said tens of thousands of Macs may have been potentially exposed.

Huntress added that because the flaw enables access before authentication, changing or deleting Screen Sharing passwords would not address the issue.
