CFTC moves toward public input on AI compute futures contracts
The CFTC expects to open a public comment period after a White House Office of Management and Budget review, typically lasting 30 to 60 days.
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is preparing to solicit public comment on futures contracts linked to AI computing capacity, as major exchanges work to launch products tied to the emerging market for trading and hedging the cost of scarce compute, Cointelegraph reports.
Cointelegraph says the regulator has sent a request for review to the White House Office of Management and Budget, a step that could affect the timing of planned compute futures from CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange, since those contracts remain subject to regulatory approval.
After the White House review concludes, the CFTC is expected to open a public comment period that typically runs 30 to 60 days, according to Cointelegraph.
Cointelegraph also notes CME plans to launch two compute futures contracts on Oct. 5, pending regulatory approval, with Silicon Data providing benchmarks for pricing, while recent estimates cited from firms including Goldman Sachs and Bridgewater place AI infrastructure spending at roughly 2.0% to 2.5% of US GDP this year.
