EU to expand Russia sanctions, raising sanctioned entities by about a third
EU diplomatic sources said the EEAS would propose about 1,600 additional Russian individuals and entities tied to the military-industrial complex, with travel and transaction bans and asset freezes.
The European Union plans to broaden its sanctions against Russia in the coming months, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in comments to a German newspaper, as the war in Ukraine continues.
Kallas said EU sanctions have already cost Russia more than €1 trillion (US$1.16 trillion), and she is expected to put forward what she described as the most far-reaching listings since the start of the war.
Once the new sanctions package is adopted, Kallas said it would immediately increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by about a third. She said the pressure must continue until Moscow ends the war.
EU diplomatic sources later said the EEAS would propose roughly 1,600 individuals and entities based in Russia, focused on the military-industrial complex, and that the designations would include travel and transaction bans plus asset freezes. The EU has already listed nearly 3,000 people and companies, and sanctions packages must be approved unanimously.
