Taiwan signs deal with Vatn Systems to develop AI underwater drones
The memorandum of understanding covers AI-enabled command-and-control systems, autonomous underwater vehicles, and supply-chain and maintenance support in Taiwan.
Taiwan has signed a deal with US defence start-up Vatn Systems to develop autonomous underwater vehicles, aiming to strengthen its asymmetric undersea warfare capabilities amid growing military pressure from Beijing, according to SCMP Economy.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed last week, Vatn and Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, the island’s government-funded weapons developer, will explore artificial intelligence-enabled command-and-control systems and deploy autonomous underwater vehicles.
NCSIST said the partnership is intended to combine overseas technology with Taiwan’s industrial and research capabilities to speed AUV development and systems integration, while improving underwater reconnaissance and maritime defence resilience.
Vatn co-founder and CEO Nelson Mills said in a statement that Taiwan is among its allies rethinking what undersea defence looks like.
