Hong Kong fire inquiry delays final report to end of October

The judge-led committee said it is reviewing written evidence and more than one million files, pushing the original September deadline to late October.

Hong Kong’s independent, judge-led committee investigating the causes of the territory’s deadliest fire in decades will submit its final report at the end of October, after the deadline was extended by one month.

According to SCMP Economy, the panel originally was tasked to complete its work over nine months and deliver findings in September, but it requested approval from Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu to move the submission date to late October.

The committee said the delay reflects the “numerous and complex” issues involved and the large volume of materials it must analyze, including more than one million files, as it processes written evidence and receives additional information from multiple parties.

It added that additional time is needed to reach findings and recommendations grounded in a factual framework, and that the chief executive agreed to extend the timeline.
