Hong Kong firms eye Malaysia rail and AI growth as ties deepen
The comments come after Hong Kong opened a new Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur alongside Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
Hong Kong infrastructure and artificial intelligence firms are positioning themselves to benefit from Malaysia’s growing expansion opportunities, industry insiders told the South China Morning Post.
The SCMP Economy story links the push to increased bilateral outreach, noting that Hong Kong recently opened its new Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur to bolster ties, and that Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 is aimed at advancing high-value, sustainable, innovation-led growth.
Rail-related demand is a central theme. Chang Che-son, executive chairman of railway systems consultancy Key Direction, said Malaysia’s traffic congestion and broad geography make it a promising market for rail infrastructure expansion in Southeast Asia, with potential for international transit operators.
He also cited Malaysia’s rail geography, including connections to Thailand to the north and Singapore to the south, plus ongoing network buildout. Three infrastructure-related companies said they are actively pursuing business opportunities in Malaysia, with Key Direction pointing to its experience working with Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation as a source of transferable know-how.
