Russia summons Japan’s ambassador over Putin Kuril Islands visit
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow summoned the ambassador after Tokyo condemned Putin’s trip to the disputed islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories.
Russia said Monday it summoned Japan’s ambassador after Tokyo criticized President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to the Kuril Islands, a territory also claimed by Japan. The islands are known in Japan as the Northern Territories and were seized by the Soviet Union in 1945, a dispute that has long strained Russian-Japanese relations, according to Agence France-Presse. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters that Japanese officials had “crossed the line of decency” by criticizing Putin’s trip and that Moscow had summoned the ambassador. Lavrov also said Japan initially indicated the ambassador could not attend immediately.
Lavrov was speaking as Tokyo continued to respond to Putin’s travel to the far-eastern islands.
