Tankers reroute erratically in Strait of Hormuz as security worsens

Vessel tracking compiled by Bloomberg shows the Amara fuel tanker has made multiple U-turns after entering the Persian Gulf empty.

Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has become even more erratic, with vessels meandering and turning back as escalating security threats and Iran’s insistence on control complicate transits, according to vessel-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

OilPrice reports that the Amara fuel tanker moved into the Persian Gulf empty on Monday, then made several U-turns and was later positioned without moving in the northern part of the strait in lanes where Iran approves transits.

The outlet also cites a local report from Iran’s Fars news agency on Monday that a tanker owned by a UAE company was detained near Iran’s Qeshm Island, though the vessels was not named and there has been no official communication from Iran or the UAE since.

Security in the region deteriorated further early Tuesday after a cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations, or UKMTO, said the impact damaged the engine room, resulted in a crew casualty, and that the remaining crew were being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard.
