Trump urges the SAVE America Act, citing India’s voter ID system

The proposal would require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections and photo identification to vote, and it has stalled in the US Senate.

US President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, arguing that voter identification requirements help make elections secure, and he pointed to India’s election system as a model in a campaign aimed at changing voting rules in the run up to the November 3 midterms.

According to reporting by the SCMP Economy, the act would require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections and photo identification to vote, and the measure has stalled in the US Senate as Trump and Republican allies press for tighter election requirements.

SCMP Economy also reported that Trump cited a recent question from India’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, who asked US administration officials how the US could hold elections without requiring valid photo identification.

Trump said India’s last general election saw more than 646 million votes cast, with less than 1 per cent cast by mail and voters required to provide photo identification, and the comparison was reinforced by a separate post from US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor backing the call for legislation.
